Azam Khan (politician)

Mohammad Azam Khan (born 14 August 1948) is a (Samajwadi Party) politician in India. He has served as the cabinet minister of Uttar Pradesh government twice and was the leader of the opposition party in Uttar Pradesh assembly.[1]

Early life and background

Azam Khan was born in Rampur, India and studied in Baqar School, Sunder Lal Inter College and Aligarh Muslim University. He has two sons - Adeeb Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam Khan. He is married to Tazeen Fatima.[1]

Political career

Mohammad Azam Khan was elected as a member of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly six times. He had been the prominent 'Muslim face' for Samajwadi party.[2] However, during the 15th Loksabha elections, his opposition to the Samajwadi Party candidate, Jayaprada and the surrounding controversies resulted in a crisis in the party.[3] On 17 May 2009, Azam Khan resigned from the general secretary post of Samajwadi party, but retained his primary membership in the party.[4] On 24 May 2009, he was expelled for 6 years from his party.[5] Samajwadi Party later revoked the expulsion of Azam Khan and he joined the Samajwadi Party back on Dec 04, 2010.[6]
